Assamese Poet Translates Tamil Classic Kurunthokai

Posted on 00:35 by Unknown

BIJOY SANKAR BARMAN

An accomplished Assamese poet and translator, 33-year old Barman already has six published books on different genres to his credit. The recipient of the prestigious Munin Barkataki Award in 2007 for his debut collection of poems Deo, Barman has been recognized by Indian Express as one of the ten ‘Best Young Writers’ of India in 2012. A post-graduate in English Literature and Sociology, Barman is pursuing a PhD on tribal myths of Assam from Gauhati University.

Besides publishing two critically acclaimed collections of poems Deo (2006) and Ashokastami (2011), Barman has edited Kabyacharcha (2012), an anthology of poems by contemporary young Assamese poets. In 2010, on the day Barman married Payal Hazarika, the duo released two interesting books. One was a novella in verse called Margherita, Mor Bishad Boibhav, about the industrial town in upper Assam where his wife hailed from, the other was Ami Kiman Dusta Aasilo, a collection of stories containing the childhood pranks of the groom and the bride. His other published works are Rupiabathanor Kabi Prantikor Kabita (2008), a bilingual collection of his selected poems published first in respected Assamese fortnightly Prantik. A committed translator, Barman has been working on translation of ancient Tamil verses Kuruntokai to Assamese for the past nine years. His poems have been translated to Bengali, Hindi, Kannada among others.

Born on August 22, 1981 (though official records make him older by about seventeen months, i.e., April 1, 1980) in a village called Rupiabathan in the Nalbari district of Assam, Barman’s poetry evokes contemporary reality through deft use of images and words. In the words of eminent Assamese short story writer, poet and literary critic, Harekrishna Deka, “social consciousness mixes with personal feelings in many of his poems, and through the uncertainty of life in Assam, he looks for signs of hopes in the everyday life.”
